Ayurveda is the oldest and most holistic medical system available on the planet. It was written over 5,000 years ago and is known to be a world medicine dealing with the body and the spirit.

Even before the advent of writing, the ancient wisdom of healing was  part of the spiritual tradition of the Vedic religion. It was a famous Sage, VedaVyasa, who put into writing the complete knowledge of Ayurveda, along with the more spiritual insights of self-realization.This body of scripture is known as the Vedas and the Vedic literatures.

The Vedic Brahmans were not only priests performing religious rites and ceremonies, they also were Vaidyas (physicians of Ayurveda).

The Sage physician-surgeons of the time were the same sages or seers, deeply devoted holy people, who saw health as the integral part of spiritual life.

Some of the earliest references of Ayurveda medicine (dating back to prehistoric times) comes from Sri Lanka and are associated with a great physician, Ravana, who was their King. Traditionally it is believed that Ravana, of Ramayana fame, was well versed in Ayurveda medicine and according to Historiography, King Ravana was the author of many medical books on Ayurveda.

Around 1500 B.C. Ayurveda was delineated into eight specific branches of medicine: Internal Medicine, Surgery, Organic Medicine, Pediatrics, Toxicology, Rejuvenation Remedies, Aphrodisiac Remedies, and Spiritual Healing.

People from all over the world came to Ayurveda schools in India to learn about this world medicine, primarily because the Veda texts were, and are, the only original and complete knowledge of Ayurveda in existence.

Spices and herbs are the source of all Ayurveda Internal Medicines.

Dispensed through hospitals and clinics worldwide, Ayurveda medical use is among the fastest growing components of the spice industry throughout the world.

Accordingly The Spice Journal will devote prominent coverage to the Ayurveda industry.
