During the pepper season in Vietnam, we go for a detailed field visit of all the growing areas to get a first hand feel of the crop situation. My partner Mr. Namboodir just returned from a week long tour of the growing areas in Vietnam. He has spoken to farmers (almost the same set of farmers year after year), traders and large exporting companies and have compiled the information. Contrary to estimates by many agencies, we feel that the crop in Vietnam is very good and estimated at around 140,000 mt this year.

Does not all spice begin life from a single sown seed? Each one delivering up its own unique and pleasant properties at maturity. Like the seed that Mary helped to deliver up into this troubled world. It was, and is, and shall ever be, itself, both unique and pleasant. As pleasant as is the very best that life has to offer.

Wise…to stop and smell the roses; much wiser…those chosen to stop and ‘accept’ Him. Him who Mary helped to deliver!!!

Comments:It is really sad to express my dissapointment like this. I was searching the spice garden which I visited in Kandy but I forgot the name. The tuk tuk driver took us there when we came to visit Srilanka in december 2013. The guide was after our life and forced us to buy herbal products. Even the prices were high but because of the continuous pushy attitude of the guide I ended up buying a SO CALLED HAIR REMOVAL HERBAL PRODUCT, which I beleived. To my horrar when I came back to india and opened the cover and saw it was written ANNE FRENCH ON THE BOTTLE. Which is a company which makes hair removal products and is not at all herbal. Also tthe bottle was half emply and just the cream was pasted to the top so that when we look at it.. it looks as if the bitle is full. It is such a shameful thing to sell something which is 3000 srilankan rupees like this. SUCH A SHAME….Fooling tourist like this is so disgraceful to the country. I would never recommend anyone to visit the spice garden and there are people fooling tourists and clame that they are selling herbal products.

I bought these 2 expensive products because they said it will reduce pigmentation. I applied it before bed as instructed; Aloe Vera cream with one drop of sandalwood oil !

  • Isabel McGeachie, London, UK

Hello, I’ve just been to gorgeous Sri Lanka for a cycle challenge and was introduced to a spice garden. I was so impressed I nearly bought the whole shop. I was most impressed with the knowledge of the herbal medicine’s that they dispense.

I work for the London Underground and they have strict policies for using any medication that is not adhered to their list. I would like to know if the herbs and spices that are used would in any way compromise me in this area .

Could you please tell me how I can get in contact with a few of these Spice Gardens so I can get a list of ingredient and check against the work policy.

Many thanks to The Spice Journal for your super coverage of these topics.

  • The Spice Journal visit to McDonalds

To verify the complaints we received about McDonalds one of our representatives visited the Kollipitiya outlet in Colombo and ordered two apple pies and a coffee.

Clerk – you want milk coffee or black coffee

TSJ – I don’t like milk coffee, please give me black coffee with milk on the side

Clerk – we cant do that (checks with her superior to verify) – I can give you milk on the side but I have to charge you Rs 100/ extra for the milk

TSJ – forget it, cancel my order

We invite the McDonalds organization in Colombo to explain how they justify charging Rs 100/ for a shot of milk. This does not happen anywhere else in the world – does it?

  • CHOGM transportation

The Spice Journal team takes this opportunity to publicly thank Sriyani Perera of the Sri Lanka Tourist Board for her professionalism, efficiency, and patience, in transporting our team throughout the city of Colombo as we attended various CHOGM functions.

Sriyani is a National Tourist Guide who was seconded by CHOGM to assist delegates traveling throughout the city, and to get us there on time. The Spice Journal team was very grateful for her knowledge and assistance and we do not hesitate to recommend her to any group who needs the services of a guide while in Sri Lanka.

If Sriyani permits us to publish her contact details we will; in the meanwhile we will forward all inquiries to her.

We also thank the drivers and crew of the shuttle buses, they were professional and helpful, and the buses were clean and comfortable.

I’ve got a buyer interested in importing ground spices to Canada.
Can The Spice Journal please confirm whether only irradiated spices are allowed in Canada? or can we also send spices that are made for the local SLSI standards.?
We tried looking for details on the internet, I couldn’t get a satisfactory answer. Your help in this would be highly appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • Ceylon Spice Company, Sri Lanka

We are a small company trying to put Sri Lanka on the map as a great producer of spices.

As you may already know, most  spices from Sri Lanka are sold in bulk and value addition is done elsewhere; hence no one knows where the products were actually grown and produced.

We understand that establishing a brand in an international market with limited resources is difficult, but we are giving it a go anyway.

It has been difficult, and the reason why is because we are focusing on Organic products.

Sri Lankan spices are more expensive than Indian spices, and therefore we are unable to compete on price, but trying to differentiate ourselves with quality and presentation.

We like The Spice Journal and are enjoying the detail articles about spices.

Big congratulations to The Spice Journal for your focus on Sri Lankan spices – thanks.

    Daniel Ortiz.
